God @ Work: Work As Worship
God @ Work: Work As Worship
Pastor Charlie Weir
The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks...
Question: “What is the chief end of man?”
Answer: “To glorify (worship) God and to enjoy Him forever!”
To worship God - is to acknowledge His worth, to embrace His worth, to engage His worth and to draw attention to His worth in any way possible.
Your work is worship. Work is not an independent action or the workplace a spiritual
“offsite venue.” Work is worship and your workplace is your parish.

Do you enjoy God?
Your view of God determines your worship of God.
Your view God determines your enjoyment level with God.
Our current cultural attempt to redeem work is broken because it comes from a work model that is broken. Embracing your work as worship, redeems your work, redeems you and can redeem others – worship is work that matters!
Genesis 2:2,3 we read, “
2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
Genesis 2:15 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.
God didn’t need a breather so what was His rest?
It was fulfillment – a deep sense of satisfaction and peace in regard to the completion
of His intent.
God’s Two-Fold Work Method
1. Spoken Words
Genesis 1:3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
The Creating Power of Our Words
Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it
will eat its fruit.”
Transform your speech and you will transform your work into worship!
Psalm 19 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. 3 They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. 4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. 5 It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. 6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. 7 The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD are firm, and all of them are righteous. 10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. 11 By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. 12 But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. 13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. 14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
God’s Two-Fold Work Method
1. Spoken Words
2. Dirty Hands
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
How do we redeem our work from something we do, to our work being worship?
1. Start over from the ending.
2. Offer your whole-self to Him – not just your after-work self.

Romans 12:1,2 (AMP)
Therefore I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies [dedicating all of yourselves, set apart] as a living sacrifice holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational (logical, intelligent) act of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].
Romans 12:1,2 ( Message) 1-2 So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

Dilemma: This is not the work I thought I would be doing.
God’s Response: I have more fulfillment and joy for you in your work than you
realize. Work as Worship!
Dilemma: My work is not producing what I thought/want it to produce.
God’s Response: Your work has more creating/recreating/redeeming potential than
you realize. Work as Worship!
