The Heart of Money
Matthew 6:19-21, 24
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
“Money makes for a great tool but a lousy lord. God makes a great Lord but a lousy tool.” - Dr. Charlie Weir
Foundational Principle – #WinningatMoney begins with our heart.
The Mechanics of Money
Give
Save
Spend
Give = Tithe
Matthew 23:23
Jesus said, 23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
When we worship God with our tithe we demonstrate God has our heart and not money and this does 3 specific things.
1) Redeems the other 90%
2) Demonstrates that God can trust us with what He has given and that He can trust us with more
3) Frees our hearts to trust God for our provision beyond what we can produce on our own.
Foundational Principle – Giving is the Gatekeeper to #WinningatMoney
The Mechanics of Money
Give
Save
Proverbs 6:6-8
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores it’s provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
Debt and saving are polar opposites.
Saving creates margin, debt eliminates margin.
Savings increase peace, debt increases stress.
Foundational Principle – Saving builds margin, margin increases peace and having peace = #WinningatMoney.
The Mechanics of Money
Give
Save
Spend
A budget is the best way to stay on point with spending. A budget is a co-developed plan for your money.
Foundational Principle - #WinningatMoney is a matter of discipline.
The Power of Money
Caring for God’s People.
Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
Caring for us.
Luke 6:38
38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
