“Evangelism involves witnessing to what God has done, is doing and will do. In light of this, evangelism cannot be defined in terms of results or effectiveness, as though evangelism has only occurred where there are “converts”. Rather evangelism should be perceived in terms of its nature and mediating the good news of God’s love in Christ that transforms life, proclaiming, by word and action that Christ has set us free.” - Dr. David Bosch, Transforming Mission
Evangelism is about God not me.
Evangelism isn’t result based its process based.
Evangelism isn’t about a religion or ideology it’s about love, transformation and freedom.
“Evangelism is teaching the Gospel with the aim to persuade.” - J. Mack Stiles, Pastor of an international church in Iraq
2 Timothy 3:16,17
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
“Evangelism is a lifestyle consistent, verbally passionate delivery of who God is, what God has done and what God is doing.” - Charlie Weir
The 4 driving forces of evangelism are…
The love of God displayed in Christ.
The power of the Holy Spirit to draw people to Jesus.
People’s desperate need for life and freedom.
The willingness to play our part.
7 Foundational Elements of Evangelism
1. Sin separates & kills.
Ephesians 4:18
They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
Proverbs 10:16
The wages of the righteous is life, but the earnings of the wicked are sin and death.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
2. Sight impacts reach.
Matthew 9:35-38
35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
3. People are more ready than you realize.
John 4:34-35
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
4. Co-Mission validates mission.
Matthew 28:18-20
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
5. Evangelism isn’t self-powered it is Holy Spirit empowered.
Acts 1:8-9
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
Acts 2:37-41
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
6. People are looking for a message to believe in & a community to belong to.
Acts 2:42-47
42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
7. Evangelism is a synergistic endeavor.
The role of the Holy Spirit includes:
Our own salvation and ongoing transformation
Divine Appointments. Putting you in the right place at the right time.
Memory, words and persuasion. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would remind them of all the things He had taught them.
Results. We do the talking, God does the transforming.
The role of the church includes:
Active back up in prayer
Teaching partners
A community to belong to
