Meet Jesus: The Teacher
Ways Jesus Taught
He taught the masses
He taught select small groups
He taught individuals
Application:
We need to respond to His teaching as a congregation
We need interactive teaching in small groups
We need to hear and apply His teaching individually
Teaching the Masses
Mark describes the Master Teacher, “…when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.” (Mark 1:21-23) And he adds, “The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching — and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.” (Mark 1:27-28)
Teaching Small Groups
Our Mission: Go and Make Disciples, Love one another
Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20)
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35)
Teaching One on one
A proud man and a proud question
“what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
A surprising answer
Jesus responded, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." (Matthew 19:21)
A Teachable Moment
"I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:23-24)
Shocked Disciples asked…
"Who then can be saved?" (Matthew 19:25)
The Master Teacher answered
“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26)
"I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:23-24)
The Master Teacher said…
“But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.” (Matthew 19:30)
The Most Frightening Words Ever!
“'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'” (Matthew 7:23)
The Straight Truth
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." (Romans 3:10-12)
Like the young man, Jesus said to the Church at Laodicea
“You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.” (Revelation 3:17-18)
The Samaritan Woman
A “chance” encounter
From drinking water to living water
Salvation comes to the village
So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers.” (John 4:40-41)
Later they said, “…we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." (John 4:42)
Why we need Jesus the Teacher
All in sin, all separated from God
True for all of our ancestors, true for us today!
Why Jesus Came
To show us the character of God
To show us how far from God we are
To teach us how to live as children of God
To take our punishment on Himself
Jesus came to bring us back to the great love of the Father
A Familiar Problem
The Samaritan woman and the wealthy young man are representatives of us all
No substitute for trusting Jesus
Jesus the Teacher helps us to…
Understand how far we really are from the Father
Understand how great our need is for Jesus who alone can bring us to the Father
“I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Jesus, the Teacher.
