Sermon Title: Foundations
What will you build your foundation on in 2016?
Matthew 7:24-27 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Two observations:
- Jesus doesn't focus on what you are building
- The rain and storms are guaranteed.
Foundation Fundamentals:
- Come- We must make the sacrifice to come to Jesus
- Listen- We have to put away the distractions and walls that get in the way of us allowing the words of Jesus to penetrate our hearts.
- Act- We cannot only come and listen but we must act.
The most important aspect of building our foundation on the rock is action. We must put his words into action.
Proverbs 23:9 “9Do not speak to fools, for they will scorn your prudent words.”
James 1:22-25 "22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
So if we are to build our lives on the rock, we must come to Jesus, listen to His words and then put them into practice.
The Key- Surrender
We follow Jesus’ ways, because our ways don’t work.
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.[a]
