Following Jesus As Lead

Sermon Notes

Sermon Title: Getting A Grip On Prayer: Following Jesus' As Lead

Matthew 6:9-13 9 “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

James 1:2-5  "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously andwithout reproach, and it will be given to him."

James 1:12-13 12" Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone."

James 1:14-18  14 "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. 18 In the exercise of His will He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures."

Lord’s Prayer Paraphrase Addition:

Lead me in the direction of life because you know sometimes I get drawn to shiny things that lead to death.

All temptation undersells the cost and oversells the product.

Jesus is teaching us a couple of things in one small phrase: our flesh is drawn to shiny things so we need His leadership to steer us away from temptations and steer us towards Himself.

Deliver Us From Evil:

  1. Save us from the evil of this age.
  2. Save us from the present evil we are in the midst of.
  3. Save us from the evil one.

John 17:13-2113 "But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. 14 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. 20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me."

Daniel 3

Talk To Yourself – Don’t Listen To Yourself

  1. 1 John 4:4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
  2. Philippians 4:13I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
  3. 2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for my strength is made perfect in my weakness. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

The Lord’s Prayer Gateway Paraphrase

Our perfect and powerful father who we approach in complete confidence of receiving mercy and grace, make your name great so others will see you for who you really are and be changed. Break into my present darkness with your rule and reign circumventing the power that is trying to destroy something and someone under your spiritual jurisdiction. I acknowledge you as my Provider – you are better at it than I am, give me the strength and wisdom to work with you and not against you. Forgive me of the times that I rebel against your standard of holiness and hurt you and I will use that grace to inform and resource my forgiveness to those who don’t measure up to my standards and hurt me. Lead me in the direction of life because sometimes I am drawn to the shiny things that lead to death and save me from the effects of the evil of this age, the evil one lying in wait for me and the evil circumstance I find myself in right now.
